“When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care
enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.” — Jean Shinoda Bolen
I would like to talk about self-care, which is often overlooked, even though it is so important in
our lives. In this fast-paced and demanding world, where we constantly juggle numerous
responsibilities, it is crucial to recognize the value of taking care of ourselves. I know this all too
well; I have been running my own business for the last 24 years while raising a family. Do you
remember the instructions given to us before the airplane takes off? “Put your air mask on first,
then assist others.” As a wife and a mother of 4, I would forget to put my air mask on first.  Even
though my kids are grown, three are married, and I am now a grandma, I still have to be self-
aware of how important self-care is.  Anyone who knows me knows I am “nurture on steroids.” I
love supporting and helping others in their life and business, but I must remember to slow down
and take care of myself first to support others.
Imagine a world where we neglect our own well-being, running on empty, and trying to be
everything to everyone. Our physical, mental, and emotional health suffers greatly in such a
scenario. However, self-care is not selfish; it is a necessary practice that allows us to be the best
versions of ourselves for our benefit and those around us. By putting our air masks on first with
self-care, we can be better spouses, parents, friends, and businesspeople.
Would you ever try to run your car on empty or without maintenance or repair and expect it to
run great and get you where you need to be? Then why do we do this to ourselves?
First and foremost, self-care is vital for our mental health. Life can be overwhelming, with stress
and anxiety becoming all too common. Engaging in self-care activities, such as time in nature,
prayer/meditation, devotions, and journaling, can help reduce these negative feelings and
improve our overall mental well-being. When we care for our minds, we become more focused,
creative, and resilient in facing life’s challenges.
Secondly, self-care has a significant impact on our physical health. Regular exercise, a balanced
diet, and sufficient rest are essential components of self-care that contribute to our overall
physical fitness and vitality. When prioritizing physical well-being, we boost our immune
systems, increase energy levels, and reduce the risk of various health issues.
Moreover, self-care plays a crucial role in maintaining emotional balance. We build emotional
intelligence and develop healthier coping mechanisms by allowing ourselves to feel and express
our emotions. This, in turn, allows us to make stronger and more meaningful connections with
others, leading to more fulfilling relationships.
Self-care is also a powerful tool in preventing burnout. Burnout has become an all-too-common
phenomenon, leading to exhaustion and diminished productivity. Self-care helps us recharge and
refuel, enabling us to handle life’s demands with renewed vigor.

Furthermore, self-care promotes self-compassion and self-acceptance. When we take the time to
care for ourselves, we acknowledge our worth and recognize that we deserve love and kindness,
just like anyone else. This self-compassion spills over into how we treat others, fostering a more
compassionate and empathetic society.
Self-care is not a luxury but a fundamental aspect of leading a fulfilling and well-rounded life.
By prioritizing our well-being, we equip ourselves with the tools necessary to thrive and be of
greater service to our families, friends, and communities. Self-care is not a one-time event but a
continuous practice that requires commitment and dedication.
I urge each and every one of you to take the time to identify your self-care needs and make them
a priority in your lives. Whether reading a book, pursuing a hobby, spending time with loved
ones, or simply taking a moment to breathe, remember that investing in yourself is one of the
most valuable investments you can make.
May we all embark on a journey of self-care and personal growth together.
